The Guildhall Tower - Wintertide
Magnificent Guildhall Tower overlooking snowy St Columb's Park
The original town hall was built in the 1600s in the Diamond area of the City and was destroyed during the Siege in 1689.
The Guildhall was built in 1887 by ‘The Honourable The Irish Society’ on land reclaimed from the River Foyle.
It was officially opened in 1890 as the administrative centre for Londonderry Corporation. It is the only surviving guildhall still in civic use in Ireland.
This time with a better look at the beautiful weather vane on the top of the building that represents the Mountjoy which was a ship in the flotilla, captained by Michael Browning, a locally born man, which broke the boom on the River Foyle on 28 July 1689 and thus relieved the city from its 105 day siege.
